Fowl Play

"Bird flu isn't the only thing you can catch from chicks. Be safe, because you never know. Avoid unprotected sex."

Recently spotted in I-S magazine, Friday Dec 16, 2005.

We spotted this ad and it got us thinking and therefore we felt that we wanted to say something.

We understand the message that they are trying to send out and we feel that their intentions were good but their method a little suspect.

Why? Firstly, we feel that it is a tad bit inaccurate because the majority of the population that is responsible for spreading the AIDS virus are men. Husbands are the ones responsible for spreading HIV to their wives and this ad seemingly unfairly shifts the blame to the women.

And two, it objectifies women as merely "chicks" and it is exacerbated by the fact that they are literally alluding these women they call "chicks" to a sickly chicken. Hence we felt the ad was poorly done.

One has to realise that most of the time it is the woman that gets the bad end of things so this ad really has to be reviewed.

We share the enthusiasm and undertsand their message of safe sex, but perhaps they could have skewed it differently to portray an image that is not entirely women biased, like the way we saw it.

SIM-UOL Beauty Pageant

NewUrbanMale.com (NUM) was at it again and this time round we were at China Black, being a part of the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM-UOL) Beauty Pageant. NUM was again one of the sponsors as the contestants were dressed in NUM gear for the beachwear segment of the pageant.

The contestants, six males and six females, were also judged based on their compatibility. They were paired up respectively and there was a question and answer section specially based on how well they knew each other.

NUM Director Shenzi Chua was among the panel of judges and once again, NUM had two special subsidiary awards to be given out – the Mr and Ms. Body Beautiful, where the winners will have the opportunity to model and be ambassadors for NewUrbanMale.com.

After the two fashion segments and the question and answer session, the judges were left to decide who would eventually be picked Mr. and Ms SIM. However, that was not before NUM got to pick our own winners for the Mr. and Ms. Body Beautiful. NUM Director Shenzi Chua was called upon to present the sash to the chosen two, which went to Marcus Soh and Koh Leok Si.

But that was not the end of the event for NUM because as the final results were out, our Mr. Body Beautiful was a double winner, winning the pinnacle prize of the night, the Mr. SIM title.

We were more than happy to have Mr. SIM as our ambassador and this new duo, Mr. and Ms. Body Beautiful - Marcus and Leok Si, are definitely two people to look out for in the webpages of NewUrbanMale.com in the weeks to come.

Miss Freshkon 2006

NewUrbanMale.com (NUM) was proud to be among the sponsors of the Miss Freshkon 2006 pageant held at Gotham Penthouse. NUM also had a mini fashion show during the pageant presenting the latest range of clothing that our store has to offer. Three dashing models were parading our best selling Party Tank Tops, our latest range of NYNE retro shirts and our own NUM polo tees.

But of course, the stars that night were the 12 contestants, who have been rehearsing all day long for this special event. The first segemnt featured them in NUM’s sports wear, while the second segment featured them in their clubbing wear and finally, they appeared in their evening dress wear. They all looked their best and the judges had a hard time picking their choice for the crown.

While the final results of the pageant were being compiled, one of the 235guys was game enough to participate in a “boogey on stage” competition. A few volunteers were picked from the audience and given 30 seconds to dance to the music with a prize going to the best dancer. Caesar (one of our 235guys) was among the participants and though he had some groovy moves up his sleeve, he was outdone by the other volunteers, some who were actually freelance dancers.

The judges eventually decided and the Miss Freshkon award went to Feliza. NUM also had our own proud moment as we got to award Alfina, our own special subsidiary award, the Miss NewUrbanMale.com Girlfriend. NUM’s own director and designer Shenzi Chua was among the judges for the competition and explained about the Miss NewUrbanMale.com Girlfriend, “I chose Alfina because I felt she was simple, nice and sincere among all the contestants, which are all qualities that are in line with what NewUrbanMale.com is all about.”

Congratulations to Feliza for winning the pageant and the Miss NewUrbanMale.com Girlfriend is definitely one to look out for in 2006.

Can You and Your Ex Ever Be Friends?

“In a perfect world, the ideal would be for exes to succeed at being friends, but in one where bitterness, jealousy, passion, and human nature exceed reasoning and rational thought, it's impossible. So unless the two of you were the best of friends before; both broke up on the same terms in a perfectly mutual breakup; both have no qualms about either of you seeing new people, and have both instilled a total honesty policy, better to leave the friendship behind... along with the memories.”Askmen.com. Full article here.

She believes that ex lovers can never be friends because there’s too much baggage involved from that relationship and you can never really share with your ex the things that you and your new partner are currently up to (whether it’s good things or naughty things).

I would have to agree with her on that but my opinion doesn't really matter. What do you think? We have a poll on that, take part in it here.
