NewUrbanMale.com carries a whole range of vintage inspired apparel that includes classic characters such as the Care Bears, Gumby, Strawberry Shortcakes and Betty Boop.

This week, we feature the story behind Betty Boop, the single lady that has not aged a day since she was big in the 1930s.

Still the fancy of some grown man, Betty Boop was the sex symbol. The character was actually inspired by the original artist's dog named "Bimbo" and Betty Boop actually went through various modifications before she was the character we know today. Initially she had a black nose and dog ears, which slowly transformed into a small button nose, while the dog ears eventually became earrings.

Image from Great-song-stylist-uk.comThese transformations came along becuase they wanted to model Betty Boop along the lines of the then hottest singer, Helen Kane. Even the name Betty Boop eventually came about based on Helen Kane's song "That's My Weakness Now" which had the words "Boop-Boop-a-Doop."

After the modifications, Betty Boop became the first ever cartoon that had a sexy and edgy look. But what really made her stand out was that she was independent and existed in her own entirety. Most female cartoon characters that time existed as a counterpart to the male, such as Daisy Duck and Minnie Mouse, but not Betty Boop.

She was all woman and she was independent. The cartoons were centered around her as the main character and everyone was wowed by her mix of wide-eyed innocence and sensuality.

That independence is why we support Betty Boop and we want her to be the symbol of strength and individuality - stressing the point that just because you are strong, it doesn't mean you can't be sexy as well.
