"Bird flu isn't the only thing you can catch from chicks. Be safe, because you never know. Avoid unprotected sex."
Recently spotted in I-S magazine, Friday Dec 16, 2005.
We spotted this ad and it got us thinking and therefore we felt that we wanted to say something.
We understand the message that they are trying to send out and we feel that their intentions were good but their method a little suspect.
Why? Firstly, we feel that it is a tad bit inaccurate because the majority of the population that is responsible for spreading the AIDS virus are men. Husbands are the ones responsible for spreading HIV to their wives and this ad seemingly unfairly shifts the blame to the women.
And two, it objectifies women as merely "chicks" and it is exacerbated by the fact that they are literally alluding these women they call "chicks" to a sickly chicken. Hence we felt the ad was poorly done.
One has to realise that most of the time it is the woman that gets the bad end of things so this ad really has to be reviewed.
We share the enthusiasm and undertsand their message of safe sex, but perhaps they could have skewed it differently to portray an image that is not entirely women biased, like the way we saw it.

Maybe they were planning to use the word 'cocks' instead of 'chicks', and that would make more sense as well since the picture is a male chicken, not a hen.
But along the way it got censored out, perhaps? :?
