On Being Beautiful

NewUrbanMale.com (NUM) has been a part of two pageants over the two weeks and we thought we wanted to put up something different yet relevant to the theme of beauty.

We know the subjective nature of beauty, so what better way to learn more about the meaning of beauty than by asking normal people questions on their perceptions of beauty.

Dove conducted a study on Asian Beauty and came up with these findings (full study here).

Only 3% of Singaporean women who were questioned thought they were beautiful.
Only 10% of Singaporean women who were questioned were "Very Satisfied" with their beauty.
The husband/partner's opinion is most important in making a woman feel beautiful.
Two of the most important bodily characteristics that the Singaporean women think makes them beautiful is the face and the shape of the eyes. The least important were the skin color/tone and the breasts.
About 18% of Singaporean women would consider cosmetic surgery if it was free.
The top three types of cosmetic surgey Singaporean women would go for is for wrinkles, followed by fat removal and nose surgey.
72% of Singaporean women feel that beauty advertising is designed to encourage women to change their appearance.
While 70% of them wished that the media could give them more confidence in their own looks and beauty.

So what is your opinion on beauty in Asia and in Singapore specifically?
