With its large yellow sombrero hat, white shirt and pants and a red ascot, Speedy Gonzales was among the biggest characters in the Looney Tunes family (second only to Bugs Bunny).
Speedy Gonzales was fondly remembered for outsmarting and outrunning Sylvester the Cat and leaving the poor cat in disastrous situations which even included Sylvester swallowing large amounts of hot tobasco sauce.
However Speedy Gonzales' fame was cut short because the charcter was discontinued in 1999 when Cartoon Network bought over his rights. They felt that Speedy and his cartoons were stereotyping the negative notions of the large Hispanic Community in the United States (with scenes featuring his friends as lazy, womanizers and hard drinkers). But thanks to a campaign by fans of Speedy as well as by the League of United Latin American Citizens (who felt that Speedy's cleverness and personality was a positive depiction of Mexicans), Speedy was reinstated on television once again.
