Touted by many as the grand finale of all windsurfing competitions for the season, this championship pits the old guard (NTU, NUS) with the new boys (SMU, SIM) and promises to be an engaging event for everyone.

Lucky In Red

Everyone wants prosperity and good luck for the Lunar New Year, even us at NewUrbanMale.com. So what better way to improve your luck than by making sure you wear the lucky color red.

Just ask Bryan Wong how his red G-string bagged him two awards at last year's Star Awards. Prior to the award ceremony, he sought an advisor who suggested that wearing red underwear would help him improve his luck and so he went one up and bought the G-string from NUM for extra measure. And it worked, he didn't leave the award ceremony empty handed.

So get lucky this Lunar New Year with red undergear from international brands like Stevens, Ergowear and aussieBums. And to get even luckier, buy eight pairs!!

NewUrbanMale.com Inter-tertiary Windsurfing Championship 2006

Watch out for the NewUrbanMale.com Inter-tertiary Windsurfing Championship 2006 come February 18-19. NewUrbanMale.com is more than proud to be part of this adrenalin pumping event, where ardent fans of the sport get to see windsurfing enthusiasts from SMU, NUS, NTU and SIM, pit their skills against each other.

This championship is the grand finale, the culmination of a whole season of windsurfing events and it is definitely an honor for the school that walks away with it. Although NUS is currently the defending champion, the other universities will definitely give them a run for their money, especially with the inclusion of SIM in this competition for the first time ever.

It is that spirit of competitiveness and determination displayed in previous championships which has gained our respect. And since those same qualities are among the few cornerstones of NewUrbanMale.com’s success, we have decided to play this active role in this sport and specifically this event.

Do look out for further details of the event and even though you might know nothing at all about windsurfing, there’s no harm in joining in the festivities and basking in the sun at this exciting event.

NewUrbanMale's Own Double Trouble

MTV has their Double Trouble - May and Choy, while we spotted our own. Yinqi (left) and Nicole were seen shopping at NewUrbanMale.com (NUM) at Heeren and we couldn't resist but to snap a picture of them.

They say good things always come in pairs, and these two pack double the punch with our Men Suck NUMtees. We would like to thank them for shopping at NUM and of course for posing for us. Thank you ladies.

On Being Beautiful

NewUrbanMale.com (NUM) has been a part of two pageants over the two weeks and we thought we wanted to put up something different yet relevant to the theme of beauty.

We know the subjective nature of beauty, so what better way to learn more about the meaning of beauty than by asking normal people questions on their perceptions of beauty.

Dove conducted a study on Asian Beauty and came up with these findings (full study here).

Only 3% of Singaporean women who were questioned thought they were beautiful.
Only 10% of Singaporean women who were questioned were "Very Satisfied" with their beauty.
The husband/partner's opinion is most important in making a woman feel beautiful.
Two of the most important bodily characteristics that the Singaporean women think makes them beautiful is the face and the shape of the eyes. The least important were the skin color/tone and the breasts.
About 18% of Singaporean women would consider cosmetic surgery if it was free.
The top three types of cosmetic surgey Singaporean women would go for is for wrinkles, followed by fat removal and nose surgey.
72% of Singaporean women feel that beauty advertising is designed to encourage women to change their appearance.
While 70% of them wished that the media could give them more confidence in their own looks and beauty.

So what is your opinion on beauty in Asia and in Singapore specifically?

Fowl Play

"Bird flu isn't the only thing you can catch from chicks. Be safe, because you never know. Avoid unprotected sex."

Recently spotted in I-S magazine, Friday Dec 16, 2005.

We spotted this ad and it got us thinking and therefore we felt that we wanted to say something.

We understand the message that they are trying to send out and we feel that their intentions were good but their method a little suspect.

Why? Firstly, we feel that it is a tad bit inaccurate because the majority of the population that is responsible for spreading the AIDS virus are men. Husbands are the ones responsible for spreading HIV to their wives and this ad seemingly unfairly shifts the blame to the women.

And two, it objectifies women as merely "chicks" and it is exacerbated by the fact that they are literally alluding these women they call "chicks" to a sickly chicken. Hence we felt the ad was poorly done.

One has to realise that most of the time it is the woman that gets the bad end of things so this ad really has to be reviewed.

We share the enthusiasm and undertsand their message of safe sex, but perhaps they could have skewed it differently to portray an image that is not entirely women biased, like the way we saw it.

SIM-UOL Beauty Pageant

NewUrbanMale.com (NUM) was at it again and this time round we were at China Black, being a part of the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM-UOL) Beauty Pageant. NUM was again one of the sponsors as the contestants were dressed in NUM gear for the beachwear segment of the pageant.

The contestants, six males and six females, were also judged based on their compatibility. They were paired up respectively and there was a question and answer section specially based on how well they knew each other.

NUM Director Shenzi Chua was among the panel of judges and once again, NUM had two special subsidiary awards to be given out – the Mr and Ms. Body Beautiful, where the winners will have the opportunity to model and be ambassadors for NewUrbanMale.com.

After the two fashion segments and the question and answer session, the judges were left to decide who would eventually be picked Mr. and Ms SIM. However, that was not before NUM got to pick our own winners for the Mr. and Ms. Body Beautiful. NUM Director Shenzi Chua was called upon to present the sash to the chosen two, which went to Marcus Soh and Koh Leok Si.

But that was not the end of the event for NUM because as the final results were out, our Mr. Body Beautiful was a double winner, winning the pinnacle prize of the night, the Mr. SIM title.

We were more than happy to have Mr. SIM as our ambassador and this new duo, Mr. and Ms. Body Beautiful - Marcus and Leok Si, are definitely two people to look out for in the webpages of NewUrbanMale.com in the weeks to come.
